SIR – Before this year’s general election, David Cameron made sure that the amount of money political parties could spend on their campaigns was raised, so that the Conservatives could fully utilise the vast amount of cash donated from all their wealthy backers.
And, he did this despite contrary advice from the Electoral Reform Society. Now the Tories have been elected, many of these supporters are getting their reward in terms of some of the policies that are being followed by the Government, which is hardly surprising.
However, to read in the press that Swiss-born banker, Henry Angest, who gave £7 million in loans and donations to the Conservatives is to receive a knighthood, (along with others who donated to the Tory party) surely seems a bit much.
But, when we also discover that Sir Henry (as he is to be known) is the chairman and chief executive of the Arbuthnot Banking Group, behind the high-interest loans company, “Everyday Loans,” which has charged a whopping average interest rate of 74.4 per cent APR on loans to financially desperate poor people, this honour appears totally unjustified.
After all, wasn’t it David Cameron who once promised to CRACK DOWN on high-interest lenders? Oh yes.. that was BEFORE he got elected!
