SIR – YET more wailing and gnashing of teeth over our ‘Democracy’ with the usual offenders trying to put a different slant on our very simple if not terribly effective ‘First past the post’ system of elections.

It does not matter how many millions voted one way or another for any political party, the simple majority wins the seat and the party with the most seats forms the next government. In the event of no majority the largest party can run a ‘minority’ administration or two or more parties form a coalition.

Why people can’t understand this basic rationale is beyond me, although of course if we had ‘proportional representation’ and or ‘transferable votes’ then of course the outcome of the recent general election would have been substantially different.

But we don’t have that and so must accept the result as it stands for the next five years.
