SIR – It is of concern that the Government is contemplating expending public finance for the purpose of supporting the campaign that the UK remains within the EU.

Firstly, it is absurd that the Government should make such a commitment, when it has started renegotiating a repatriation of powers from Brussels.

Negotiations have a far better chance of success if it is made clear that the Government would support our leaving the EU, should no significant concessions be made. Secondly, strong vested interests will collude, to misinform the public of the alleged benefits of remaining within the EU.

Hence the Government’s possible intervention, and having at its disposal public finance and the auspices of the state, would seriously question the legitimacy of the referendum.

It is important that Conservative MPs challenge the Government in the Commons regarding this matter and hold it to account.

Meanwhile those supporting the case to leave the EU should not be daunted by the self-justifying rhetoric of their opponents, and should be seeking every opportunity to refute them.
