SIR – You report that Bradford MPs are being urged to back a campaign to free up more land for affordable homes.
Perhaps the three new city MP’s could ask Cllr Val Slater why only 20 of the eventual total of 119 houses to be built on Council owned, brownfield designated land in Cliffe Avenue, Baildon, are to be affordable.
This site was formerly a school and playing fields so in effect is green rather than brown resulting in building costs being minimal.
Thus with slightly tighter spacing around 150 affordable houses could be built for those who have no capital through having missed out on inherited wealth and the massive escalation in property values.
No doubt the Council will say that they have a legal responsibility to sell the land to the highest bidder and allow the developer to maximise his profit.
This is eyewash and indicates that their socialist principles are only effected for a few weeks before an election.
John Pashley, Westcliffe Avenue, Baildon
