SIR – I am from Bradford originally, now living in New Zealand, and am researching our family history.
I am trying to find the war records of two great uncles and wondered if someone may be able to add to their stories or point me in the right direction for more information.
I have tried the extensive record collection of Ancestry.com, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and other general ‘googling’ to no avail. I am aware that many of the First World War records were lost during the blitz of the Second World War.
Wilfrid Thomas Schofield, born 1891, known as Tom, signed up with the Bradford Pals. He went home on leave pre embarkation but was a day late returning. His unit had left without him and he was assigned to another unit. Tom did not return from the war.
Tom’s brother Arthur Schofield, born 1893, fought in the First World War and returned.
They are two sons of William Schofield and Hannah Stockdale who ran a butchers shop in the Bowling area of Bradford.
We have a couple of family stories about their signing up and departure but that’s where the stories end, and unfortunately those who may have known more are no longer with us. If anyone has any information they could share it would be fantastic.
