SIR – As a point of clarity to Captain Turner’s most informative letter regarding the European Union, we were offered a referendum by the Labour Government of Harold Wilson whether to remain in the Common Market or EEC (Letters, June 11).
The implication of the point made by Captain Turner is that we were offered a referendum as whether to join the EEC.
In reality, Mr Heath’s Conservative Government had negotiated our entry without a mandate from the residents of the UK. In the same way mass immigration had also been imposed on the British people and again without their consent.
As a commitment has been made to hold a referendum, the initiative needs to be taken by Ukip and other organisations to make a coherent case for our withdrawal.
MPs like Philip Davies of Shipley, pictured, will also play an important part in countering the self-justifying rhetoric to remain within the EU.
It cannot be sufficiently emphasised that Ukip’s emergence as a coherent political force, and its success in last year’s European Elections has been vital in securing this forthcoming referendum. Let battle commence!
