SIR – I hope Joe Woollard has numbered me amongst his myopic left-wing loonies because we need desperately such people to counter the ill-informed claptrap which so disfigures your letters page.
We take pride in our efforts to show that Tory supporters like Mr Pollard are often mean-minded individuals and so lacking in compassion that they demonstrate the truth of Theresa May’s observation that the Conservative Party is the nasty party.
At the same time they encourage David Cameron to persist in making the false distinction between “hardworking” people and the unemployed, who Mr Woollard considers to be feckless and work-shy.
Would he, I wonder, apply this description to those “middle managers” from Morrisons who are to lose their jobs to help balance the books?
Will they be given time to find another job of equivalent responsibility and reward or will they, because they seem reluctant to take a zero-hours contract in a call centre, suddenly be relabelled benefit scroungers. Perhaps he would be good enough to tell us.
