SIR – The owner of the Polandia Off-Licence on North Parade has been found guilty of trading illegal tobacco (T&A, May 22).

He also pleaded guilty to possessing a substantial amount of illicit cigarettes and hand-rolled tobacco, as well as hiding these illegal cigarettes in the shop’s ceiling.

Despite the deliberate attempt to conceal his illegal stock, there was no mention in the report of a loss of licence, just community service and costs. Why not? Surely this should be the minimum that we should all expect to see, otherwise the sentence will be viewed as unduly lenient.
