SIR – I remember that headline a couple of years ago at the Haworth Vintage event, when re-enactors turned up dressed in German uniforms.
There was uproar by council officials who threatened to have the “culprits” removed as they were offending people.
Interestingly, the same thing happened at at a vintage event a Ramsbottom in Lancashire yesterday.
A friend of mine, dressed as a German general was threatened with arrest by the police if he did not leave, as some people (I suspect council officials) found his mode of dress offensive.
My friend stood his ground saying he was quite willing to be arrested as long the police arrested people dressed in vintage costumes that he found offensive.
This put the police in a difficult situation and a senior officer was called. The situation was resolved when my friend was told that he was not committing any offence and was free to go about his business. Bradford Council take note!
