SIR – When Tony Mole attempted to bring Speedway back to Odsal – irrespective of the cosmetic adjustments made within the stadium since 1997 – one disabling factor would always be in play: the noise of the bikes.
However I would argue the current crop of quad bikes are as loud if not more so than modern speedway machines, and they certainly are in the aggressive “look at me” fashion they are being ridden in.
So one such rider has suffered head and serious leg injuries... hardly a surprise. What is surprising is how futile the effort appears to be to clamp down on these individuals who ride as if Speedway has indeed returned to our city?
Does no one in authority monitor the apparent mass of CCTV cameras, recording the comings and goings through the city? No need for expensive and risky car chases, just registration numbers and a knock on the door to part “chummy” from the toy they clearly don’t use in a responsible and safe manner. Either get them off the highway and get more gurneys ready in casualty.
