SIR – John Appleyard tells us (T&A, May 19) that the unions do not pick the Labour Party’s leaders.
While that may technically be so, we still hear Unite’s Len McCluskey warning that his union could consider cutting its ties with Labour (and its funding) if the next person in the top job was not the “voice of ordinary people.”
So, no threat or underhand compulsion there then!
The dead hand of the unions obviously continues to hover in the background, and will put off many people whilst that is the case.
