SIR – We have now moved into a new era of multi-party politics, which is good for democracy. It is good that electors now have more choice but if that choice is not represented in parliament then democracy has failed.
Once the votes were cast for our parliament, the SNP nationally polled approx 1.4 million votes and won 56 MPs, Ukip polled approx 3.9 million votes and won one MP.
It’s time to change the first past the post system, which is no longer fit for purpose.
Ukip is now clearly the nation’s third largest party via votes and percentage, receiving more votes than the Lib Dems and Greens combined, but this is not represented in our parliament.
Our democracy is broken – it’s time for a proportionally representative system where everybody’s vote counts.
Jason Smith, Ukip Bradford Chairman, Woodlands Avenue, Queensbury
