SIR – Well! More of your correspondents are talking of fair votes since Labour’s knockout in the General Election.

Many on the left accepted that others could be treated unfairly – it didn’t matter so long as Labour benefited equally with the Tories.

They never have! The Tories have always benefited most from our sham democracy. Question is: can Labour expect to fight again with any hope of winning?

Some in Tory ranks would would be happy to see the back of the “troublesome Scots” and will fight any appeasement of the nationalists.

“Let them go and Conservatism in England will last a thousand years!”

Meanwhile, Labour dinosaurs think: “Let’s hang on in there. Our time will come!” Like the armless and legless knight in the Monty Python sketch, it’s no use issuing a challenge you can’t or won’t back up.

The EU referendum will be the excuse for Scotland’s leaving the UK and without a popular revolt and possible civil disobedience – as over the Poll Tax – the Tories will forge on.
