SIR – On Sunday, Bradford Salem RFC completed the league and cup double by winning the Yorkshire Shield.

As Director of Rugby of the club, this was the proudest moment of my life.

Last July, my boys could be seen shedding blood, sweat and tears as they hauled JCB tyres around Lister Park as part of their pre-season strength and conditioning programme. We were cheered all the way round by the local community, who were in high spirits after their Eid celebrations.

The hardest part of my job has always been team selection, but I stick to my principle of meritocracy at all times, regardless of race, colour, creed or class.

The results cannot be disputed.

I have therefore taken the unprecedented step of writing to Buckingham Palace to invite Mrs Windsor to come to Heaton and meet me for a fact-finding mission.

She may learn how to unite a community. She may learn a bit about equality and hard graft. But my ultimate goal would be to shame her into relinquishing the throne, and allowing our head of state to be selected on merit. Jobs for life, awarded at birth and supplemented by the state, are no longer appropriate in these austere times.
