SIR - As one to whom Canal Road congestion is an added deterrent to visiting central Bradford, I must question the competency of those responsible for culverting the beck.

Not making themselves aware in advance of the problems associated with the existing variable flow rate and not working 24/7 in dry weather is indicative that they are not up to the job.

It can only be in Bradford that such an ordinary project should now cause a further three month’s frustration on top of the already greatly excessive original 12 months.

It is to be hoped that the cost will not be allowed to escalate from £3.8m to £4.65m on a time scale basis and that those in the council commissioning the work had the wit to impose a time penalty clause.

This financial penalty could be used to compensate those traders suffering from consequential reduced turnover.
