TODAY is never anything less than hugely difficult for anyone who was at Valley Parade on that truly horrendous day 30 years ago.

It is a date which will always be indelibly imprinted on the psyche of any Bradfordian.

Today is the day when we remember the 56 who died and all those who were injured. We remember the horror of that day, whether we were there or not.

The whole country remembers those terrible events, and will today spend time in silent contemplation of what happened in Bradford.

This is not a day for apportioning blame or discussing theories. It is a day for remembrance, pure and simple, and of commemorating those who lost their lives when they had simply gone to support their local football team.

All our thoughts should go out to the families of those who died, to those who were badly injured, to those who were traumatised by the unfolding terror of that day.

Within today’s Telegraph & Argus we present a commemorative supplement to mark the passing of the 56, and perhaps to help those who were not there, or maybe were too young, to understand what happened.

There are perhaps some of us who wish to make a more concrete commemoration of the 30th anniversary, and while it could never, ever be said that anything good could truly come out of such a tragedy, there is a way.

You will find on the back of our supplement details of how to donate to the Plastic Surgery and Burns Research Unit at the University of Bradford, which was set up in the wake of the fire. You may well consider this an appropriate way to mark this sombre day.
