SIR – The people have spoken (and the general election result is around what thirty-odd per cent of them wanted). New Labour will rue not introducing Fair Votes after all those years of Thatcherite rule on less than two-in-five votes. Greedily they wanted the same trappings of power by similarly getting a majority of seats on a minority of votes.

Scotland is a short step from leaving the Union with Tories in power down here and little support up there (and where is Labour without its Scottish MPs?).

Ironically, what might save the Union is the fact that Scottish Parliamentary elections are held under PR and if enough Unionist MSPs are elected they may thwart the Nationalists. There again, if England decides to leave the EU against the wishes of the majority of Scots...

All great empires end in ruins and where will the British Commonwealth be without Britain? Happy days!
