The death of Keighley Cougars player Danny Jones at such a young age is a tragedy for his family, everyone who knows him, and the fans of the club and of Rugby League.

All our thoughts go out to his wife Liz and their five-month old twins after Danny died following a suspected cardiac arrest during a game at the weekend.

Cougars' plans to retire the number six shirt that Danny wore, as well as renaming their main stand after him, are fitting tributes to this much loved player and family man, and the show of support from fans is testament to the high regard he was held in.

The calls for mandatory heart screening to take place for players at all levels of the game, backed by Cougars' captain James Feather, make eminent sense.

Although players such as Danny are at very high levels of physical fitness, unexpected heart problems can be a silent, invisible killer which do not make themselves known until it is too late.

Regular screening takes place at the top tier of the game for Super League clubs, but it is high time that it is introduced at all levels of Rugby League - indeed, in all professional sports - as a matter of course.

If that is done, it might prevent another tragedy such as the one that befell Danny Jones, and the grief it has brought his young family.

In the meantime, very pragmatic help can be given via the charitable website www.justgiving.com/dannyjones29, where a benevolent fund has been set up in Danny's memory to help his family.

Donating won't reverse the horrible events of the weekend, but it might help with the future for his loved ones.
