SIR – Those being inconvenienced are the travelling public and not the privately owned bus companies who will no doubt be still getting the full public subsidy irrespective of whether there is a service or not.
Would it not be more effective for the bus drivers to continue to run the services, but refuse to collect the fares.
This would confine the dispute to be between the two antagonistic parties, make loss of profit the lever and benefit the public.
The bus companies have an obligation to provide a service irrespective of whether or not, through their own mismanagement, they have the facilities to charge for it.
