SIR – Regarding Alec Suchi’s letter from April 27. The numbers of Muslim women who wear the full face veil in the United Kingdom are so low that it simply does not merit the amount of discussion devoted to it.

Should a veil-wearing woman be required to give evidence in court, the judge can demand that the woman remove her veil, or a clerk of the court can verify that the veil-wearer is indeed whom she says she is.

I am no fan of the veil, but we cannot logically claim to be a free and liberal society if we stop women from dressing how they choose whilst simultaneously condemning societies where women’s clothing is a matter of legislation.

Regarding “adapt[ing] to the host community”, Mr Suchi would be in the significant minority of Brits living abroad, the majority of whom do not speak the language of their host countries, as can be seen in parts of Spain, nor dress like their adopted compatriots, as can be seen in places like Dubai.
