SIR – David Hornsby and John Hall would be more accurate if they were to accept that the NHS was merely implemented by the Socialist Government of 1945.
I remember the Bradford Grammar School Speech Day of 1944 which was held in Eastbrook Hall.
The speaker was the proper Liberal Lord Beveridge, who told the pupils to sit quietly as, due no doubt to Bradford’s reputation for social reform, his speech was to be directed at their influential parents.
He then proceeded to detail the policies of his Beveridge Report which included the National Health Service.
In 1945 Attlee announced the introduction of the welfare state based on the Beveridge report of which Bradfordians had been given advance knowledge.
