SIR - David Hornsby rightly says that the NHS was founded by the (Socialist) Labour Government of 1945.

I seriously doubt that the current (New) Labour Party has the principles needed to fight to establish such an organisation.

I have been disgusted by how its leader appears to be making overtures to moderate or soft Tories.

However, given the unfairness of our first past the post voting system and the number of parties now contesting elections, Labour’s best chance of winning is to be all things to all men and women and win over the few tens of thousands of voters in marginal seats who will decide who governs. Principles play no part here.
