SIR – Seemingly a fish-and-chip war is about to erupt in the village of Wrose as a franchised big name Harry Ramsden’s muscles its way in (T&A, April 30).
What’s in a name though?
The two long-established 1930s’ businesses selling the same products fear for their livelihoods.
There is some basis for this apprehension for in the 30s there were three fish-and-chip shops. Now one of the premises is closed, converted to a dwelling.
The planners apparently do not have to take into account the past trading history of a location and there is some confusion as to whether chips and fish fit the modern nomenclature of fast food.
The CEO of Harry Ramsden’s claims that suitable sites are hard to find, yet in the recent T&A property supplement there are nine businesses for sale selling fish and chips.
Will the power of market forces mean low, low prices for us Wroseites as we queue for the best offers?
Or will history repeat itself?
