SIR – I was deeply troubled to see that our city is home to two of Britain’s worst 10 constituencies for car crashes, one of them being Bradford West, the constituency I hope to represent in Parliament after May’s General Election.
Calls for tougher driving tests, combined with a greater focus on accident blackspots, are to be welcomed. Perhaps still more important must be a focus on behavioural change.
The Government is increasingly favouring drive-awareness courses as an alternative to penalty points for minor speeding offences. As part of the course, drivers are shown a film demonstrating the human consequences of reckless driving at its very worst: a parent recounting the loss of her child.
I would favour a review of the current driving test to include a drive-awareness segment of this nature so that young drivers are more alive to the consequences of dangerous driving – not just in theory, but in practice. This is certainly something I plan to take up with the DVLA and in Parliament should I be elected on May 7.
