SIR – After reading T Healey’s letter in the T&A regarding telephone cold calling I thought I’d like to suggest my way of dealing with the many daily ones we get.
If it’s just a silent call, then obviously I just replace the receiver. If somebody asks to speak to either me or my hubby, I ascertain what the call will be about and a) if they’re evasive or b) trying to sell us something I politely say “One moment please” and put the receiver on the table/settee/desk etc.
After about four minutes I pick up the receiver and … drat, THEY’VE hung up on me. It may not stop them trying again but it gives me a little satisfaction.
I know they are only doing their job, but at least they’re not sent away with a flea in their ear.
