SIR – It seems that, even with the support of the Coalition Government itself plus the Labour Party (to say nothing of an estimated 90% of the British public) it doesn’t guarantee an issue taken up by a Bill in Parliament can end up even being discussed there, never mind democratically turned into law.
A proposal to ban the use of wild animals in circuses will now not be passed and go on to the statute book, after being blocked repeatedly by...(er)...just three Conservative backbenchers!
Labour MP, Jim Fitzpatrick had first introduced his own Private Member’s Bill on banning wild animal use, but objections were made at every stage since September 2014 by the Tory threesome.
This stopped even talk of the pros and cons of the issue, which will hardly sound ‘democratic’ to most voters!
The Bill was finally blocked for the twelfth time on Friday March 6 and killed off by Conservative MP, Andrew Rosindell, after he lodged an objection.
Under the present ‘rules’ (should they be changed?) this ended any possible discussion of the matter.
The second Tory ‘assassin’ was Christopher Chope MP, the third, a certain, Philip Davies, MP for Shipley.
