SIR – Tories’ plans for funding schools are disappointing. They will fund schools where children are aged 5-16, but there will be no extra cash in real terms.
When the increase in numbers is allowed for, this will result in a 7% cut in spend per head. There are no commitments on pre-school funding or spending on children aged 16-18 or FE colleges.
Now David Cameron’s announcement on March 9 of “ 500 more Free Schools” under a Tory Government makes matters worse for Heads and staff. What will be the future of their schools? Do they wish to carry on? Many Heads do not.
The best impartial evidence for their success comes from Sir Michael Wilshaw, head of Ofsted. The results of their inspections was that Sir Michael called for an end to the “sterile” debate on school structures.
Most Heads of schools. parents and teachers would support the Head of Ofsted. “Leave our schools alone please, especially if you are going to cut the resources”, they will say.”
