SIR – I wasn’t surprised when I saw this mentioned in the Telegraph & Argus recently. In my previous employment I have seen at first hand the erosion of front line services and facilities damaged by the brutal sustained attack on Local Authority budgets by this LibDem/Tory coalition government.
Bradford’s Labour run council has over the last four years worked its socks off to defend these services. However, things are so severe now that radical decisions have to be made.
I doubt if a number of the bowls clubs will have the resources to manage this and this will lead to clubs folding.
This will be tragedy, as they are not just bowls clubs to many but are community hubs, drop ins for people who just want a chat and a brew.
Contrary to popular belief bowls is not just a sport for the older people, many clubs have engaged young people and encouraged them to take up the sport.
One such club is Greengates Bowls Club based in the Idle and Thackley ward, they worked tirelessly last summer with local schools to create an after school bowls club, which turned out to be a great success.
