SIR – Your feature “On This Day” for February 26, 1964 showed that even in those days the clergy liked to have their say.
At that time I was a traffic police officer and must say the numbers given for the road accidents was very much exaggerated. It works out at about 189 per day for the year.
Even if the surrounding areas, covered by the West Yorkshire Police, were included, I doubt if we could have coped.
