SIR- I read Peter Finan’s letter (Letters, January 21) with amusement.
I do not think ex-pats in Spain should be sent back to Britain if they can’t speak Spanish.
I think they should learn Spanish and not expect a free translator, for example, when they go to the benefits office.
Which gets me thinking.
How many of our 750,000+ ex-pats claim benefits in the country they have moved to?
There are not many countries as generous with benefits as we are.
Mr Finan’s question about Welsh and Gaelic speakers is laughable.
I can’t imagine the NHS in Wales is inundated with requests for translators from native speakers.
Asking entrants into Britain wishing to live and work here to speak English is not knee-jerk intolerance, it’s common sense.
I share Jason Smith’s beliefs on this issue and am happy to be one of his ilk.
