SIR – It is so illogical that Bradford should spend £41m on swimming pools located as proposed, that there must be a hidden agenda.
If such an amount of money is available, then it should be used to provide swimming pools and gymnasia integral with, or adjacent to, current large schools.
Education needs to cover a broad spectrum and quality sporting facilities will serve to benefit the social standing of those not academically endowed and better balance society.
The cost effectiveness of the £41m will be enhanced by the utilisation of the fitness centres outside school hours by the general public and judicious overlap will extend community involvement.
What will be needed is good management and no doubt a charity like Nuffield, who have a wealth of experience would be able to advise or even become involved.
