SIR – Letters are appearing in the T&A after my original letter regarding my enquiries about steam locomotives based at Low Moor shed and if any of them survived and are being used on preserved railways today.
My grandfather was a driver on the railways and lived next to the former Low Moor shed. Sometimes my brother and I would stay at Nan’s house for the day during school holidays so my mum and dad could go to work. Granddad was on “shed duty” one day, he came home for lunch, took us both into the shed, climbed aboard an engine and drove it out to the water tower, filled it up and reversed it back into the shed. We got off and went back to Nan’s house.
I remember that day very well. The only time I have been on the footplate of a moving engine. Oh how I wish I could do that again. To blazes with the HS2. Who on earth wants to travel at 200mph when we’ve got these beautiful monsters.
They were reliable in the snow, not like today’s trains. Bring them back I say. Bring back yesterday’s memories.
