SIR - A total of £5K is to be spent from the Wyke ward budget (T&A, January 9) to try and protect the war memorial in Low Moor from unauthorised traveller encampments.
While this is entirely understandable, one has to wonder whether it could be a waste of a large slice of the ward’s budget.
Bradford Council and the police, working in collaboration, have the ability under the 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act to serve a Section 62 Notice on any trespassing travellers, which requires them to move immediately from the site in question.
If the authorities act at once, as they are able, then there should be no real need for this sort of expenditure, which may be able to be put to better use elsewhere.
Perhaps this should be considered by Councillor David Warburton (Labour) before such a large sum is committed?
