SIR – Of the many falsehoods put to the people of this country in a vain attempt to win their votes, apart from say the impossible dream of Labour that somehow they could guarantee a GP appointment in 48 hours, has to be the promise to reduce the overall cost of Government, usually by making a bonfire of the quangos.

As everyone knows this never happens, as for every such body abolished two or even three new ones take its place at even more cos, eg, police commissioners, who are a waste of time and money.

Another good example being elected mayors; Greater Manchester has opted for this so now in addition to its 645 councillors, yes 645, they will now have 646 with the new mayor to support.

The rationale being that he or she will now wield ‘powers’ previously held in Whitehall. But unless the politicians and civil servants in London previously having this responsibility are dispensed with, where is the saving? It doesn’t exist.

Against this background, easy to understand how people get disillusioned.
