SIR - Over several months there has been considerable correspondence submitted to your letter page discussing the situation in the Middle East.

The very creation of modern Israel in 1948 has been the basis of a continuing conflict, as this required the displacement of people who had lived in that area for centuries to accommodate new arrivals of Jews from Europe.

Discussions regarding Gaza, the occupied territories and illegal settlements merely deal with the symptoms of a more fundamental problem. As things stand it is difficult to envisage a peaceful end to this impasse.
