SIR – The report (T&A, December 29) that the police made 5,532 requests for translators in the last year was somewhat eye-opening.
Indeed, it is concerning that West Yorkshire Police refused to discuss the cost “on grounds of commercial sensitivity”. The public surely have a right to know such information, and that stance is indefensible.
What is more concerning is who pays for all this translation. Surely most people requiring translators should be required to cover the cost themselves?
There may be good reasons on the odd occasion, but otherwise this really should not be coming out of the public purse. The excuse that it is to ensure that justice is properly served simply will not wash.
