SIR – Regarding your correspondent, Mike Ridgway’s informative letter (T&A, Dec 10) regarding the unanticipated effects that the adoption of plain packets for cigarettes had on the smoking habits of Australians.
He gave his current thoughts about what such a move in the UK would have on UK smokers’ habits and on the UK packaging industry, and gave the vote firmly against the plain packet. However, I am reminded of a comment made by another such correspondent to a national newspaper that took the opposite view.
That view is that plain packets are of immense benefit in that they will allow much more space for the political spin doctors to write their manifestos in the run up to the election in May 2015.
