SIR – Your article regarding Stephen Browning (T&A, December 12) who was serving a life sentence for a vicious, unprovoked murder and who used his steel-toed boots to break the jaw of another prisoner because he had the temerity to report the fact that Browning has stolen his tobacco, beggars belief.
Why on earth was Browning allowed to wear such boots? He is a violent man who used his feet to kill a complete female stranger.
His court representative in mitigation stated that it was Browning’s first violent incident since being sentenced for the murder in 2007 and that his earliest release date was 2031.
Are we all supposed to be grateful and sympathetic?
This thug should complete his sentence in solitary confinement, manacled at all times and wearing nothing more substantial than flimsy carpet slippers.
Questions also ought to be asked of the Prison Service.
In my view whoever allowed these steel-toed boots to be worn should be given a job with no more responsibility than handing out the toilet rolls.
