SIR – Bah humbug. Re aid to India, your correspondent Mr Waterhouse, seems not to grasp the fact that the airport cost £1.9 billion and we gave aid to that country of £1.9 billion.
No matter where the money was spent we still gave aid to the tune of £1.9 billion over ten years.
Maybe we should look at their space program. The Government are looking to put a man in orbit by 2016. A manned mission would take seven years and $2.0 billion (dollars US). Did we carpet the rocket? Is there an M&S in the space departure lounge?
It makes no economic sense to borrow vast sums to give to countries who clearly do not need it.
Oh, by the way we owe £1.5 Trillion.
Charity SHOULD begin where it is needed. Here.
