SIR – Graham Hoyle is wrong to suggest that all the major political parties received a drubbing in the recent elections.

Labour increased its vote in the European elections by 9.67 per cent and gained an extra seven MEPs. And gained more than 300 new councillors in the local elections.

With less than half the electorate bothering to vote, it can hardly be called a ‘Nelson Mandela Moment’ as stated by D S Boyes (Letters, May 29).
