SIR – On BBC Look North recently, there was a feature on the tunnels below Sunbridge Road.
The developers, Sunbridge Wells, stated that the Beatles did an impromptu late night session there when it was a blues club in the 60s known as the Little Fat Black Pussycat – of which I was a regular punter in 1964.
To substantiate this claim, I would like to know if any of your readers were there on that night, as this comes as total news to me.
As far as I can remember, The Cat (as it affectionately became known) didn’t do after-hours sessions.
It’s a well-known fact that the Beatles played the Bradford Gaumont in 1963 and 1964, and could possibly have gone there after their show to check out “Bradford’s answer to Liverpool’s Cavern”.
However, I’m not sure if The Cat had opened yet in 1963, (I could be corrected on this point) and by 1964 the Beatles had made it big-time; too big, I would have thought to perform at a small underground Bradford venue. Has anyone any memories of this?
