SIR – You recently reported on the high number of children being admitted into hospital to have rotten teeth extracted (T&A, May 21).
I’m not a supporter of adding fluoride to our drinking water, but I understand that in other parts of the country children in deprived areas brush their teeth at school.
Although this shouldn’t be necessary, it probably is a positive way to educate children who are lacking support at home and the cost involved is probably minimal compared to the cost and trauma of having teeth pulled out.
Maybe this would be an effective and less controversial proposal than fluoridating water?
