SIR – Although the EU election results in most countries are a revelation, no-one should forget that for the key post of President of the European Commission, currently up for grabs, not one of the hundreds of millions of ordinary EU citizens will get a vote on his (or may be her) appointment.

Because, like most other important decisions, this one will be taken behind closed doors by an Oligarchy.

Make no mistake, the EU is not democratic in its make up or operation, but a dictatorship achieved not by force or arms as under Napoleon or Hitler, but by bureaucratic bullying and financial manipulation.

I hope UKIP’s resounding success will be the Nelson Mandela moment that puts the people of Great Britain on the road back to freedom and finding their own destiny just like we always used to do?
