SIR – Your article about saving Hirst Wood weir (T&A, May 22) led me to think about the contentious issue of the proposed water turbine at Saltaire.
It seems to have dropped from the spotlight over recent months, but I doubt that it’s disappeared from the planner’s agenda. I always wondered why Hirst Wood weir wasn’t being considered as an alternative site, since it’s only part of the buffer-zone of Saltaire and not the World Heritage Site itself, where preserving the unique heritage is such an issue. Might assisting fish migration and providing sustainable power both help towards the reconstruction of the Hirst Wood weir?
There may be technical problems to the idea which are outside my knowledge, but both tick environmental/conservation boxes and perhaps financial boxes too, on the Hirst Wood site which is geographically so close to Saltaire.
