SIR – I was sorry to see the announcement of the death of the violinist Joan Spencer (T&A, May 20).

I attended what was probably her first major concert when she played the Beethoven violin concerto in Keighley with a local orchestra. This concerto is arguably the pinnacle of classical music and she played it superbly, cadenzas and all.

She also looked very glamorous which impressed me almost as much as her playing.

I am glad she became a professor and fellow of the Guildhall School of Music.
