SIR – Recently a UKIP member deserted the “cause” saying the UKIP tries to “exploit the ignorance of British society”. Terry Tordoff would disagree (Letters, May 13).

He will be disappointed when UKIP gets very little at the next general election.

Some of us with actual experience of overseas trade know that you do not make progress by going backwards.

Erecting trade barriers and driving away foreign investment may benefit the fishing industry, but would probably say goodbye to car manufacturing.
