SIR – I was pleased to see the editorial (T&A, May 20) welcoming a West Yorkshire-wide quality bus alternative to the expensive Leeds Next Generation Transport Trolleybus proposal, which is for one route only. Bradford taxpayers would be hobbled with NGT costs for decades to come, even though there is no NGT benefit for Bradford.
The editorial stated the need for cheap and convenient buses as a voluntary alternative to cars. However, on more than a dozen routes in Bradford there are already frequent, safe, high-quality services which are cheap for season ticket holders.
Much better services and ticket deals would be available if West Yorkshire signed up to a Bus Quality Partnership, but in the meantime a majority of Bradford’s commuters have a lower-stress and lower-cost alternative to the car. There are also good train services, while a better road safety strategy would encourage more walking and cycling.
