SIR – As a former police officer and then higher executive officer with the Ministry of Transport, I must correct the wrong impression that some people will get from the letter ‘Bring in eye test rule’, by David Rhodes (T&A, May 12).

To quote from his letter, “Amazingly, a percentage of new Bradford drivers admitted they were unable to see the registration plate (I presume he means the letters and digits) during the eyesight assessment in their driving test but were still given their licence.” This is wrong.

If a person fails the eyesight test, carried out at the beginning, the test is stopped at this point and the driving part of the test is not started – because of the failure of the eyesight test. This has always been the case and remains so.
