SIR – I totally agree with Frank Dignan and his views on student loans (Letters, May 16), but the situation is even worse than he suggests. Quite a large number of students have actually left the country and there is no way that the money can be successfully recouped from them.
They should be added back on to the 43 per cent of students who are not earning enough to start to pay their loan back. The Institute for Fiscal Studies has said that the whole scheme is on a knife-edge at 47 per cent and one more percentage point will cause the scheme to fall into deficit.
It beggars belief that the Coalition Government could come up with a scheme that trebled fees and still ends up losing money, especially as Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats had pledged to abolish fees altogether in their 2010 manifesto. What a way to run a country.
