SIR – I erect Lib-Dem posters in Baildon. Let me reassure Mr Watson (Letters, May 12), that Lib-Dems are indeed winning in properties displaying our poster, as well as in the wider community when people are prepared to debate. However, as Mr Watson so presciently observes, it will be (some of) the electorate who decides who wins Baildon Ward in two weeks’ time.

That will depend to some extent on who succeeds best in slagging off their rivals.

Take Nick Clegg. Showing his true colours in debates with Brown and Cameron, he won across a wide section of the public. Left and right weren’t having that and a thorough character assassination took place in their crony press.

Clegg did not lie. He broke a promise not to increase Labour’s tuition fees at the insistence of the Tories who wanted to discredit him and because Labour had left the coffers empty. Promises sometimes cannot be kept because of changing circumstances. To deny the truth is another matter entirely. Vote if you want to. Please do it wisely.
